Aileen Joyce Hedman was born in Astoria, Oregon to Marie and Alfred Hedman. She had three brothers, Art, Gordon and Eugene, and two sisters, Agnes and Mabel. She attended Richmond Grade School and Franklin High School where she was Cherry Blossom Princess. She later attended nursing school. In her early years she loved to ski. In 1951, she met the love of her life, Jack W. Clevinger and they were married on May 23, 1952. The young couple moved to Niagara Falls to stay with Jack’s mother and returned after a year to Portland with their first child Tom. Soon to follow were three daughters, Jill, Judy and Suzi. They joined the Multnomah Athletic Club when the children were young and she was an active badminton and tennis player. As the children grew up, Aileen worked at Manpower, the Chalet L’Abbe restaurant and Fred Meyer headquarters.
In 1968, Aileen and Jack purchased land on the Oregon Coast at Netarts Bay and built the Bay Shore RV Park and Marina which they owned and operated for 25 years. She spent every weekend and her summers working at the coastal business welcoming customers, many of whom became lifelong friends. She enjoyed crabbing, fishing and clamming, sharing her secrets for success with customers.
Aileen loved to play the piano, garden, cook, bake and care for her growing family of 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. After she and Jack sold Bay Shore Park, they spent winters in Arizona where they later built a home in Lake Havasu City. She enjoyed joining family and friends in Nevada on their trips south where she loved walking and playing cards with friends.
She and Jack have been members of St. Luke Lutheran Church and volunteered on the Grauer Project providing clothing to low-income children at back-to-school time. They also served on the church Welcoming Committee.
Aileen loved her big family and planned many gatherings with them all in Black Butte, Sun River and at the Oregon Coast. She had a wonderful time playing games, doing puzzles, laughing, hiking, cooking and visiting with her loving children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Her gentle spirit and loving nature will be missed greatly by all who knew her.
Aileen is survived by her husband Jack, her brother Art, her brother-in-law and sister–in-law, Don and Jan Clevinger, her four children Tom Clevinger (Becky), Jill Whittaker (Thomas), Judy Guyer (Skip), and Suzi Merz (Kevin), and by her grandchildren Ryan Clevinger, Katie Marsolan (Tim), Greg Sargeant, Chloe Hollatz (Tom), Mike Merz, Chris Merz, Dezaray Wilkerson, Madeline Whittaker, William Wilkerson, Jack Merz and J.T.
