Betty Virginia Sigurdson Romans Obituary
Betty Virginia was born June 14, 1925, the third daughter of Sigurd and Winnie Sigurdson. Her sisters were Margaret and Maybelle. Her dad ran the Warrenton Clam Company in Copalis Washington. The family resided in an unpainted shack across the banks of the Copalis River.
Sig sold out in 1927 and moved the family to Portland. They bought a house on 35th and NE Fremont. It was a remarkable step up. The family was able to live comfortably during the depression years. Betty attended Beaumont Grade School and graduated Grant High School in ‘43. She attended Oregon State College in Corvallis for two years. She joined Delta Zeta Sorority and took business courses, choir, French and art. She was a striking blond and very popular. She was athletic, a good swimmer, singer, dancer, and later a good golfer.
After high school, Betty worked at the Swan Island ship yards. When the war ended, she went to work for Pacific Power and Light in downtown Portland, in Personnel and Payroll. She remained there all of her working career.
She met Bud Romans at PP&L and they married. They bought a house on NE 68th so Betty could remain close to her family. Bud had a boat built, The Regard. They joined Tyee Yacht Club. They enjoyed golf, bridge, hosting family dinners, and a trip to Europe. The marriage lasted 13 years. They had no children.
Betty was stylish, sociable, and had many friends. She was close to her sister Maybelle Warren. She kept in touch with a multitude of Sigurdson cousins and was close to the Anderson side of the family too.
In the last years of her life she relied on the help of others to attend to her finances and affairs. Her health declined and she resided at Gilman Park Assisted Living in Oregon City for 6 years. She was happy there and well liked. She received good care with special attention from neighbor Amy McDermot, friend Karen Cain, and her niece Christina Pollatzk.
Betty passed away peacefully July 21, 2016 at the age of 91.
