Diane M. Carskadon

Diane Mary Carskadon passed away peacefully November 25 at Oatfield Estates in Milwaukie. She was 80 years old. Born in Portland, Oregon, August 19, 1934, Mrs. Carskadon was a lifelong resident of Portland. The daughter of Hugh and Claudia Lacey, Diane was a devout catholic whose volunteer efforts touched countless lives. She was president of her class at Academy of the Holy Child (High School) and Marylhurst College where she earned her degree in Education and taught grade school before starting a family. In 1957, she married her high school sweetheart, Jim Carskadon. Diane’s world was her family --- her 6 kids and her husband. Most of her free time was given to volunteer efforts at the Oregon Historical Society, Holy Family Altar Society and Albertina Kerr Center in Portland. Before her husband Jim’s untimely death in 1986, Diane was a member of the Portland Rose Society and joined her husband for several prominent events including the Portland Rose Festival during her husband’s tenure as Rose Society President. She also actively participated in the Garden Society. Diane valued education, so after her husband’s death she enrolled at Portland State University and earned her advanced Certificate in Library Science. Although she was offered many full time positions, Diane enjoyed being a substitute librarian which allowed her to work in several Portland Public School Libraries. Diane Carskadon will best be remembered for her service to others and her gentle and dignified demeanor. She never wanted anyone to “make a fuss” over her and was always eager to hear how others, especially her kids and their kids were doing. Diane is preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Claudia, her brother Hugh, sisters, Barbara and Phyllis, her husband Jim and youngest son, Daniel. She leaves her sons James (Trey) and Marty, daughters, Lizz, Dorothy and Karen, and grandchildren, Ken Walruff, Lindsay and Jake Carskadon, Alexandra Jorgenson and Reilly King. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Albertina Kerr Centers at www.albertinakerr.org/GetInvolved/WaystoDonate A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, December 12, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church, 7525 SE Cesar Chevez Blvd, Portland, Oregon 97202.
