Donald S. McClave, May 7, 1941 - July 4,2016
Don McClave was born in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in Great Falls, Montana. He was a graduate of Denison University in Ohio, a Captain in the U.S. Air Force and is a Viet-Nam Veteran. Don died peacefully July 4, 2016 due to complications of Alzheimer’s. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Christine and son Andrew. Don had two children Susan and Andrew. Dad’s greatest legacy he left behind was his willingness to lead and navigate through the many challenges life provides.
Don took great pride and leadership in the community to help others in many facets of life. His daughter Susan was killed climbing Mt. Hood in 1986 in the tragic event that cost the lives of 9 students and adults. Through the loss of his daughter, he contributed to the legislation efforts to mandate ‘GPS Beacon’ devices be used by all climbers of Mt. Hood. Those devices implemented aid first responders in locating lost or trapped climbers.
Don was a leader in his family and taught me many principles to follow. Integrity, Honesty, Compassion and Determination. My Dad had a career in the Portland Business Community since 1975 and was blessed with many friendships as a result of his time with First Interstate Bank, Portland Chamber of Commerce and Portland State University. He enjoyed seeing people work and succeed in various aspects within the scope of his career. He relished the chance to meet new people, diagnose and solve problems.
Don’s passion outside of his family and career centered around Model Aviation. He spent at least 50 years of his life building, flying and coaching others to fly Stunt model airplanes.
I am grateful for my relationship, friendship and time I had with him and in turn,am glad he no longer is plagued with physical problems. The peace our family shares is that we are assured that he is home with the Lord, and his daughter, and we will see him again.
A memorial service is planned for Don on Saturday, August 27 at 4:00pm at All Saints Episcopal Church, 4033 SE Woodstock , Portland.
