Dorothy Lee Bates passed away in Gresham, Oregon on August 26, 2017 at age 86. She was born May 3,1931 in Cottonwood, Arizona to George and Thelma Reynolds. Dorothy graduated from Glendale High School in Glendale, Oregon on May 25, 1949. In 1950 she married Monte Allen Bates Jr., who preceded her in death. They had four children, two daughters Sandy Bates Gutzalenko (David) and Lisa Bates Crow (Stan) and two sons Monte Allen Bates III (Ginger) and David Bates (Jan). Dorothy was an amazing mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to eight grandchildren Mindy, Lance, Erin, Kayla, Emily, Mollie, Maggi, Tim; and great-grandmother to five great-grandchildren Kristina, Owen, Olive, Maple and Simon. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother George Reynolds. Dorothy received a master’s degree in elementary education from Southern Oregon University and taught elementary school in Grants Pass, Oregon for over 25 years. She published a book about Learning Centers and taught workshops in Oregon and Washington. She loved teaching and instilled the love of reading, music and art in her students. Dorothy played the piano, guitar and ukulele. After Dorothy retired, she was able to pursue her passion as an artist at her home on the Umpqua River. She received awards for roses from her garden. Dorothy also loved to sew, knit, crochet and embroider for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothy enjoyed playing golf and tennis. Many years later, she moved to Newport, Oregon where she owned a commercial fishing boat. She treasured her days on the beach gathering shells and walking miles on the beach. She belonged to the Yaquina Art Association in Newport, Oregon where she painted beautiful cards and paintings for her family. Dorothy enjoyed travel to many places in the world. She visited her daughter Sandy when she lived in Hawaii, her son David and family when they lived in Australia, her daughter Lisa and her family when they lived in England and Idaho Falls. Other travel included Spain, France, Arizona, and San Juan Islands. Dorothy laughed with her son Skip about building a home on Camino Island. She loved the islands in Washington and skiing at Grand Targhee with her daughter Lisa and family. Dorothy is survived by her wonderful friend Jack Jordan, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren She was a remarkable woman. She touched so many lives with her kindness and joy of life. She will be deeply missed. No services will be held.
