Peggy Smith died Dec. 24, 2014, in Federal Way, Wash., after a prolonged illness. She was born April 30, 1917, and was the seventh of eight children of James and Mary Grubbs. Her father, James, died before her second birthday, leaving her mother to raise eight children on a teacher's salary through very difficult times, including the Depression. Peggy and Roy had three children, twins, Donald and Donna, and three years later, Judith. While in the Portland area, Peggy and Roy were active members of the Milwaukie Presbyterian Church. Their closest friends were fellow church members. When her children were teenagers, Peggy returned to work, performing secretarial duties at Milwaukie School District, Veteran's Administration Hospital and private psychiatrists. Upon Leroy's retirement, they traveled extensively in Europe, North Africa and Australia/New Zealand. Peggy was preceded in death by her seven siblings; and daughter, Judy. She is survived by her husband, Leroy; children, Don Smith (Beverly) and Donna Cassidy; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Peggy will be dearly missed by all those fortunate to have known her. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2015, at Wilhelm Portland Memorial Funeral Home, 6705 S.E. 14th Ave., Portland, OR 97202.
