George Walford Weidlich

March 7, 1922 — October 6, 2016

George Walford Weidlich was born in Pierre, South Dakota on March 7, 1922 to Frank and Theresa Weidlich. He grew up with his older sister, Ruby and his younger brother, Leonard. In 1936 tragedy divided up this family when Dad’s mother died from an accident. Dad was sent to Gresham, Oregon to live with his Aunt Cora and Uncle August, where he attended high school and worked afternoons and weekends at Uncle August’s store on Powell Valley Road. After a job selling shoes at JC Penney, our Dad was drafted into the Army, eventually meeting our Mom, Louise Barnes, when attending Pomona College for Officer’s Training. Dad stayed in contact with Mom all through the war, convincing her to elope and marrying the day Dad was discharged from the Army on December 21, 1945. They moved to Walla Walla where Dad attended Whitman College and Mom worked at the Veteran’s Hospital as an Occupational Therapist. Once he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Whitman, Mom got a job at the Veteran’s Hospital in Portland and they moved back to Oregon. Dad received his teaching degree from Lewis and Clark College and taught grade school for seventeen years in both Portland and Beaverton. In 1952, Mom and Dad had a baby, their first, Homer “Homie” Barnes Weidlich, named for our Grandfather. He sadly died at six months old, devastating both of our parents. Then three children came, on August 5, 1957, Michael Barnes Weidlich was born, Richard Hartley Weidlich, June 9, 1959, and Susan Virginia Weidlich, August 13, 1964. From 1960 to1968, Dad and Mom had accumulated what became the bulk of their rental properties and Dad took several years off from teaching, ultimately retiring to run their rental property business with Mom. Dad is survived by his three children, his five grandchildren, Scott Weidlich, Emily Weidlich, Olivia Andersen, Parker Andersen, and Grant Andersen. Also, Barbara Weidlich of Spencer, South Dakota, his sister-in-law. Rest well, Dad. Service Information
