May 5, 1919 — February 13, 2016

John "Jack" Lindsey Stendal was born May 5, 1919 in Boise, Idaho to George and Henrietta Stendal. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Portland and went onto attend Reed College. A chance to attend the US Navy Academy's Reserve Midshipman Training at Anapolis in the winter of 1941 brought his college career to a halt as he was needed for military duty. After receiving further training in sonar at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, he reported to the Pacific Fleet for anti-submarine duty. He served in the South Pacific, except for a time as an instructor at the Navy's sound school at San Diego, until the end of World War II. In 1943, he married Irene Applegate, and she was able to accompany him to his duty station in San Diego where their daughter, SueAnn, was born. Following the war, Jack was a CPA with Haskins & Sells and Later with the Oregon Department of Revenue. Jack was active in Oregon politics. He was the campaign treasurer for Governor Tom McCall and Secretary of State Clay Meyers. He also served on and chaired the Oregon Fair Commission. Jack loved to travel and take pictures of all the places he visited. He was an enthusiastic woodworker and carpenter. He remodeled the kitchen himself including building all the cabinets and when his new house was built in Lake Oswego, he built all the cabinets himself. Jack was preceded in death by his wife of nearly fifty years, Irene and his committed partner Flo Carr. He is survived by his sister, Geoetta Whitney of Salem, his daughter, SueAnn Peters(Dan) of Wilsonville, step-grandson Ryan(Sheena) Peters and great-step grandaughter Averie of Lodi CA. A celebration of Jack's Life will be held Thursday, March 3, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Mary's Woods,17400 Holy Names Drive, Lake Oswego, OR 97024. Service Information
