Monti, Mario 98 April 16, 1917 Mar. 14, 2016 Mario Monti, 98, passed away peacefully Monday, March 14, 2016, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Portland, with his family by his side. He was born April 16, 1917, in Portland, was raised in Cervarolo, Italy and returned to Portland at the age of 18. Mario was a proud U.S. Army veteran and the last surviving member of the 249th Coast Artillery Army Band. He was an accomplished accordionist, excellent dancer, avid hunter, mushroomer, happy bee keeper, prolific gardener, enthusiastic bocce player and overall lover of nature. His proudest accomplishment was his role as a devoted father to his children, Jan, Carol and John, proud grandfather to John, Telia, Cameron and Karl, and devoted husband to his beloved wife of over 71 years, Josephine. They were recognized by WWME on the day of his passing as the longest married Catholic couple in the State of Oregon. Survivors include his brother, Remo Monti and sister, Natalina Alberghi both of Emilia Romagna, Italy; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass for Mario will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 19, 2016, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 3400 S.E. 43rd Ave., Portland. The rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m. Services will be followed by a reception for family and friends at the parish hall.
