Mary Teresa Bucher
March 13, 1918-April 3, 2013
Mary Teresa (Grey) Bucher passed away quietly on the morning of April 3, 2013, after 95 loving, fun-filled and interesting years. She was born March 13, 1918, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She graduated from East High School in Des Moines, then moved to Portland in 1937.
She met her future husband, Sherman Bucher, in the Oregon Shipyards in 1942 and they were wed on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 1943. Besides being a homemaker and mother to six children, she also was a dance instructor, clerk at Meek's Drugstore on Southeast Belmont, a bookkeeper at Platt Electric and Oak Grove Disposal and worked for the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Wine Factory and Tektronix.
She was an avid reader, crossword puzzle solver and knitter. She generally did not have a lot of use for television (except for KOPB) and was the go-to person for both family and general history.
She was preceded in death by her husband Sherman in 2001 and three grandchildren. Survivors include sons Richard Berney (Susan), Sherman (Robert Cowan), William (Patti) and Donald (Colleen), and daughters Jeanne Bennett (Ted, deceased) and Kathleen Rutkowski (Charlie), 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks to all at the Odd Fellows Home of Portland who were so caring and loving in looking after mom in her final days. We also want to thank Providence In-home Hospice for helping make her exit from this world comfortable and peaceful.
A private interment was held at Wilhelm’s Portland Memorial. A memorial rosary and Mass were held in Holy Family Catholic Church, followed by a reception in the parish hall that was filled with memories and joy at a life well lived.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Odd Fellows Home of Portland, 3102 S.E. Holgate Blvd. Portland OR 97202.
