Michael (Mike) Paolo
12/27/1925 – 11/23/2015
The hardest thing to write; how do you put into words all that was our Dad.
Dad was born in Yamhill County to Tony & Mary Paolo. At a young age they moved to the Italian neighborhood in southwest Portland. He graduated from Benson High and enlisted in the Marines at age 17 where he served on Iwo Jima as part of the Marine Raiders. He and fellow soldiers climbed Mt. Suribachi where the famous photo was taken of the raising of the American Flag.
After returning to the States he met and married Carrie Pulsinelli. They raised two daughters, Mary Lyn Glaser (Bob) and Michelle Christensen (Terry) and welcomed their one and only Grandchild, Gina Christensen who was the love of their life. They celebrated 63 years of marriage until her death last year.
Dad worked as a store manager for Safeway for over 20 years, his last store being the original Safeway on Main St. in Gresham. He left Safeway to open his own market on 21st & Lovejoy – Paolo’s Fine Foods.
Our Dad was the sweetest, kindest man we’ve ever known. He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone. We are so grateful for all that he taught us; the value of hard work, honesty, integrity and appreciation for laughter. His wit was lightening quick and he was forever making us laugh.
He will be dearly missed.
