At five foot three, Minnie Matilda Nida’s petite and feminine stature masked the large life she led. During World War II, she was a First Lieutenant in the United States Army. Working as a battle nurse, she toured both North Africa and Europe. She was part of the 91st Evacuation Hospital who cared for the soldiers after D-day and during the Battle of the Bulge. It was her “Meritorious Service” and effort under enemy artillery fire that lead her to receive the Bronze Star. During her downtime overseas, she enjoyed dancing, concerts and even met her husband Dean, who she would eventually outrank. After the war she continued to work in the field of nursing until she retired from home health care at the age of eighty.
Of all her numerous war stories, nothing compared to the stories of Minnie’s true love: her family. The baby of six, and nicknamed “Honey,” she was close to her siblings with whom she shared many cherished memories. She was extremely proud of her husband Dean and three sons: Ross, Thomas and Mark. Nothing made Minnie smile more than talking about her family and receiving a phone call from her children would brighten her entire week.
Minnie’s 102 years are hard to sum up by any small measure. Her bold life is humbling and will continue to inspire us for many years to come. Defined by her strength, courage and faith, she will be deeply missed buy always remembered.
