Mitchell Walter Heinemann Jr. MD Oct. 2, 1917 - July 4, 2016 Dr. Mitchell Walter Heinemann Jr. was born in Portland Oregon to Mitchell and Clara Heinemann. He attended Laurelhurst Grade School and graduated from Benson Polytechnic School in 1937. Mitchell attended Oregon State University and the University of Portland before transferring to Reed College, from which he graduated in June 1941. He entered the University of Oregon Medical School (now Oregon Health Sciences University) in Sept.1941 and graduated with a Doctor of Medicine Degree in Sept. 1944. He served an internship at the Multnomah County Hospital and immediately thereafter entered the Armed Services. He had several stateside duty assignments, but spent most of his service at the station hospital at Camp McQuaide, Ca. where his duties included Chief of the Laboratory, Chief of the Surgical Service and Chief of the Medical Service. He received his Honorable Discharge from the Military Service in July 1947 with a grade of Captain. He then returned to Oregon and entered general practice in Milton-Freewater. After working there for several years he decided that he wanted to specialize in the field of Pathology. To qualify for this he spent the next 4 years in various hospital residencies in Portland, New York (Columbia University) and San Diego. Following this he was certified in the specialties of Anatomical and Clinical Pathology. His first position was that of Associate Pathologist at Good Samaritan Hospital Portland Oregon and he remained in this facility becoming Director of the Laboratory. He retired from active practice in 1969. After retirement he and his family moved to Spain for a year and a half and were able to travel all over Europe. He loved carpentry and all the tools involved, built and remodeled many houses. He had the passion and talent to build most anything. He was very clever and will be missed by his family. He is survived by his loving wife Elaine Heinemann and children Mitchell Heinemann III, Shirley Heinemann, Ronald Heinemann, Lamont Willson, Brad Wallingford, Debbie Wiley, Joe Heinemann, Julie Strader, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mitchell spent his last two years of life at Willamette View in Portland Oregon. A special thank you to Chaplain Michael O'Phelan and hospice nurse Verlinda Randall who provided spiritual and physical comfort during his last years. Service Information
