SANDRA SUE MOTTERN-OSTRANDER June 13, 1949-July 23, 2013 Funeral Service for Sandra will be August 1st Thursday 2:00pm at Willamette National Cemetery A Celebration of Life afterward 3:30pm at the Smile Station 8210 SE 13th in Westmoreland Sandra Sue Mottern was born to Harold Calvin Mottern and Shirley Mar Schoonover on June 13, 1949, in Portland Oregon. She was raised by her Grandmother (Ethel) and Grandfather (Merritt) Schoonover. They lived on Claybourne Street in Westmoreland with her mother Shirley, sister Karen (Kay) and Uncle Carl, she lived her entire life in Portland. She attended Llewellyn Grade School and graduated Cleveland High School in 1967. She worked for Portland Wire and Iron where she met Robert. She later worked for Alpkem Corp. for many years. She married William D. Woodruff on Jan 12, 1968 in Portland; and he died on Sept 13, 1972. Sandra and William D. had 2 daughters Jan Michelle and Terri Lynne . She married Robert Glenn Ostrander Feb. 15, 1975 he had 2 children Robert Jr. and Deeane from a previous marriage. Sandra and Robert G. had twins Jason and Stacy. Stacy preceded her in death Feb. 29, 1976. She also leaves behind her sister Karen (Kay) Andrews, her husband of 38 years Robert G., children Jan Mcpherson (Denis), Terri Martinez (Alex), Jason, Deeane and Robert Jr. Ostrander and 12 Grandchildren and best friend of 60 years Penny Wood Spaziani. One of the most important things in Sandra’s day was wondering what she was going to eat? If she just finished lunch she wanted to know “what’s for dinner?”. A couple of her favorite places to eat were Tad’s Chicken ‘n Dumplins and Popeyes Chicken, and Olive garden. Another of her favorite foods was berries; I think she would walk a mile for a berry pie. Sandra liked finding facts, wondering who, why, when or where, if it was a City (who named it?), a street (where did it go?), or a house (who lived in it?). Her questions were never ending. Her sense of humor is something she will be remembered for; she would keep you laughing till you cried and your stomach hurt. When the Oregon Trail Sesquicentennial wagon train (1993) came to Oregon Sandra and her friend Penny donned their pioneer dresses and rode in a covered wagon and walked the Oregon Trail from Mt. Hood to the end of the trail in Oregon City. They helped to add information to the kiosk at the End of The Trail in Oregon City before the Interpretive Center was built. Sandra, Bob and Penny donned their pioneer garb and joined in town celebrations from Downtown Portland to Oregon City to Brownsville. Sandra was an avid genealogy buff, documenting and researching her family for many years, going to libraries and cemeteries in Oregon and Ohio. The most fascinating yet disturbing fact she found was a cemetery in Ohio where her G-G Grandparents Joseph and Margaret Schoonover are buried had been turned into a park. Most all of the headstones are gone, replaced with playground equipment. Remarkably their headstone is still there and the children play around it, a little vandalism but not bad condition for being a 148 year old stone. Her trip back to Ohio this year didn’t happen as she was diagnosed with cancer April 23rd two weeks before she was to go. She fought a hard fight against cancer but in the end cancer won and she passed away within 3 months time. May she rest in peace as she will forever be in our hearts and our memories.
