William Lawrence Carey

William L. “Bill” Carey March 05, 1925 – October 13, 2015 William Lawrence “Bill” Carey was born in Portland, Oregon and spent most of his life in Milwaukie, Oregon. He passed away in his home in Milwaukie at the age of 90. Bill graduated from Milwaukie High School in 1942. He attended Reed College until he was drafted into the Army and served from July 1943 until January 1946. During his service in WWII, he spent time in New Guinea, The Philippines and Japan. While in the service he was a Technical Sergeant and received several decorations. When he was honorably discharged, he went back to Reed College. Bill then graduated from both Reed College and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received a Physics degree from Reed and an Electrical Engineering degree from M.I.T. After college, Bill joined PGE as an Electrical Draftsman in Engineering and held several positions during his more than 30 years with the company. His position upon early retirement in 1981 was General Manager of Administrative Services. Bill then joined Engineering Design Associates in Tigard as a Registered Professional Engineer and Consultant. He worked as a consultant well into his 80’s. In 1950 he married Beryl Darby and they built a home in Milwaukie in 1959 that Bill lived in until 2015. Together they had three children; Vincent, Adele and Carol. Bill enjoyed cooking and earned his pilot’s license so that he could fly around Oregon and Southwest Washington. He was an avid ham radio operator for most of his life and spent a lot of time woodworking. He built several pieces of furniture that family members still have displayed in their homes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beryl, in 2011. Bill is survived by his three children, Vincent Carey, Adele Moore, and Carol McDonald; 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his companion, Janet Fauglid. Janet was a very important part of the last years that he spent with us. Bill was well-liked by all who knew him and he was well-loved by family and close friends.
